Inspired by a recent article by Jim Patterson in California Diver Magazine, I decided to go back through some of my photos and try them out in black and white. In some ways, it's given new life to photos that I otherwise would not have shared, such as this one from Bali:
Sea anemone, Bali, Indonesia
And then there's one that was made for black and white. A market squid from the end of one of the recent squid runs off southern California:

Usually colorful nudibranchs take on an even more otherworldly feel in monochrome. They seem to glow from within:
Hermissenda crassicornis
Wrecks also tend to lend themselves to good black and white photos, but the size and murky water around the HMCS Yukon makes the shape of the wreck much too large for a single photo. In this photo, I focused on the forward guns, with some giant white-plumed anemones as foreground subjects.

Cabo San Lucas, August 2010 - Part 7 (Final)
Cabo San Lucas, topside
Shore break and sunset on the Pacific Ocean in Cabo San Lucas, MX
We stayed at the Playa Grande hotel/timeshare on the Pacific Ocean side of Cabo San Lucas. A benefit of staying on the Pacific side is that the beaches are not as crowded and there's a nice breeze coming off the ocean. The downside is that the swells can be large and there's a nasty shore break, so swimming in the ocean is not advised. There are frequently strong rip currents as well.

The last day of the trip was a 'no diving' day. We chartered a fishing boat out of the Cabo harbor and went south, into the Pacific Ocean. The swells were large, but the sun was out. We came across a large pod of dolphins and they followed us, surfing with the bow of the boat.

We also saw sea turtles, swimming along out in the middle of the ocean. They initially look like a piece of flotsam, just floating there. As we approached, they would dive under and we wouldn't see them again.
The 'Arch' at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
There is beauty above and below the water at Cabo San Lucas.
